Establishing a Makerspace in Your School or Classroom
Dr. Janette Hughes, Canada Research Chair in Technology and Pedagogy and Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Ontario Institute of Technology (UIOT), shares her perspective on Makerspaces and how teachers can create these types of spaces in their classrooms and schools and foster a ‘maker mindset’ in students. Her paper, which is posted on the Ministry of Education website, is a worthwhile read for educators.
Youth Science Canada
Fueling the curiosity of Canadian youth, Youth Science Canada (YSC) is the country’s leading organization for student projects in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Its network of member organizations annually welcomes 25,000 students and their projects at over 100 regional science fairs in every province and territory. The Canada-Wide Science Fair brings together 10,000 visitors each year to engage with the country’s top 400 projects that answer intriguing scientific questions and solve real-world problems. YSC’s Smarter Science framework and workshops help K-12 teachers implement scientific inquiry in their classroom.
FIRST Robotics Canada
FIRST Robotics Canada’s mission is to inspire Canadian high school and elementary school students to pursue further studies and careers in science, technology and engineering. With the guidance of expert adult mentors, Grades 9 to 12 students are offered opportunities to develop their critical thinking and team building skills, while exploring robot design and participating in tournaments to showcase and demonstrate their work. FIRST Robotics Canada also offers a variety of programs for Kindergarten to Grade 8 students.
STEAM Horizon Awards
The STEAM Horizon Awards was founded in 2016 and is open to Canadian youth who promote positive change in their community through Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics. Award winners receive a $25,000 prize towards their post-secondary education. Information about the application process for 2020 will be posted on the website in the fall.
STEAM Education
Based in St. Thomas, Ontario, the Steam Centre is a charitable organization that develops curriculum for teachers and provides workshops to allow students the opportunity to explore STEAM subjects.
Canadian Mathematical Society – Math Competition Grants
The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) supports the development and passion for mathematics through competition for students of all ages. The CMS conducts math competitions, provides funding for regional competitions and supports Canadian participation in international competitions. They also offers grants to support math-related activities for elementary and secondary students. The next application period for Math Competition Grants begins June 1, 2019.
