About the Award
Purpose
The Student Success Champion Trustee Award is presented annually to one trustee who has demonstrated exceptional leadership and commitment to equity through tangible governance initiatives that have directly contributed to improving outcomes for marginalized students within their school board. This award recognizes trustees who prioritize inclusive education and equitable opportunities through their role in governance, policy, and community engagement.
Criteria
- The trustee has championed or played a key leadership role in one or more governance initiatives or decisions aimed at addressing systemic barriers and improving equity of access, opportunity, or outcomes for marginalized student populations. (e.g., developing or advancing equity and anti-racism policies, advocating for identity-affirming programs or supports, improving data collection and accountability related to student equity outcomes, etc.)
- Evidence that the initiative(s) led to measurable or observable improvements for marginalized students, such as improved achievement, engagement, representation, well-being, or access to resources and support
- Demonstrates meaningful collaboration with students, families, equity-deserving communities, or board staff
- Incorporates community voice and student voice in decision-making
- Demonstrates an ongoing commitment to equity and inclusion, not just through a single initiative, but as a consistent lens applied to governance work
- Reflects OPSBA’s commitment to educational equity, student well-being, and responsible governance
Eligibility
- The nominee must be a currently serving trustee at an Ontario English public school board.
- Must have completed the OESC Trustee Professional Development Program
