OPSBA statement regarding the August 22 class size announcement

8/23/2019

“We are working with school boards to assess the impact of today’s class size announcement on students and staff across Ontario who will be returning to class in less than two weeks. The impact of today’s announcement may vary from board to board, however based on the information provided by the minister, there are unlikely to be any changes to the class sizes or course offerings that boards had been planning for the 2019/20 school year.

With that said, we remain very concerned with any plan to increase average secondary school class sizes from 22 to 28 students. Our priority is ensuring that we are providing an environment that fosters student success and well-being, while offering the classes that students want and need to take in order to get into the post-secondary programs, skilled trades, college or university of their choosing.”
